Program Support
The Henry Luce Foundation provided generous seed funding for the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Environment and Resources. Additional funding has come from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the School of Earth Sciences, Woods Institute for the Environment, Center for Environmental Science and Policy, and other Stanford sources. As the program reaches its capacity of approximately 30 PhD and 10-15 masters students, additional support for graduate fellowships, research funds, and discretionary Director's Funds is particularly important.
Graduate Fellowships
IPER is a highly selective program and its students are remarkably successful in competing for fellowships both within and beyond Stanford. Given that tuition and Bay Area housing costs are nearly $50,000 annually per student, Stanford must be able to offer increased support to continue to attract the most talented and promising students. Endowed fellowship funds exist in perpetuity, may be named for the donor or someone the donor wishes to honor, and ensure lasting support for students.
Research Support
Original research that breaks disciplinary boundaries is an integral part of IPER students’ graduate study. Their research is aimed at understanding urgent environmental problems such as the effects the globalization of the food economy has on local ecosystems; the challenges of providing clean water to rapidly growing urban centers; or the market forces influencing the development of renewable energy source (Read more about Student Research). Support is needed to fund graduate student research, including data analysis, travel to field sites, and other related expenses.
Director's Funds
Discretionary support for IPER will fund curriculum development, the expenses of visiting scholars, the cost of student travel to attend national meetings and conferences, and other program expenses. Director's Funds also may be endowed and named for their donors.
