Welcome New IPER Students!

These joint MBA or JD and MS in Environment and Resources students are our latest pioneers, taking immediate advantage of the Academic Senate's approval of new joint degree options late last year to delve right into energy technologies, water resources, land conservation, and many other areas covered by IPER.

Admissions
Deadline for applications for the PhD is November 27, 2007! This year's Admissions Committee includes new members Larry Goulder (Economics), Debra Satz (Philosophy), David Freyberg (CEE), Bill Barnett (GSB), as well as returning members Paul Ehrlich, chair, and Helen Doyle, associate director.
Applications for the joint MS in Environment and Resources from students currently enrolled in the School of Law and Graduate School of Business will be due early Spring quarter.

Where are IPER alumni now?
Kirsten Oleson is a 2007-2008 Teaching Fellow in Stanford's new Masters in Public Policy Program.
Josh Goldstein is continuing his work on conservation finance in Hawai'i as a post-doc with the Natural Capital project. His recent efforts include presenting conservation business strategies for private landowners at the annual Hawaii Conservation Conference; participating on a steering committee charged with analyzing incentives for local conservation to Hawaii's House of Representatives; and organizing a meeting between Kamehameha Schools (an educational trust and major landowner in Hawaii) and NatCap researchers to explore how to integrate ecosystem services into KS's strategic land planning effort.
Linh Pham is working for Occupational Knowledge International in San Francisco, conducting environmental certification in developing countries.
Holmes Hummel, a AAAS Congressional Science Fellow, just joined the staff of Representative Jay Inslee (D-WA), who sits on the Energy and Commerce Committee, including the Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality, charged with drafting climate change legislation for the House, and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming and the Natural Resources Committee.
Mark Hayes is now an associate with RREEF Infrastructure, a group making private investments in power plants, ports, rail and other infrastructure assets.
Mike Mastrandrea, a research associate with the Woods Institute for the Environment, has been involved in the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), co-authoring (with Steve Schneider) Working Group II, Chapter 19, "Assessing Key Vulnerabilities and the Risk of Climate Change and, with others, Working Group III, Chapter 3, "Issues Related to Mitigation in the Long-Term Context."
Student Fellowships and Awards
Hilary Schafer (4th) received a fellowship from Stanford's Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society Fellowship.
Caroline Scruggs (2nd) received an EPA-STAR Fellowship.
Kim Nicholas Cahill (5th) was awarded a graduate student scholarship from the American Society for Enology and Viticulture; also awarded "Best Viticulture Student Poster" at the American Society for Enology and Viticulture annual meeting in Reno, NV in June.
Mike Hooper (3rd) has been appointed the Richard S. Goldsmith Fellow in International Conflict and Negotiation at Stanford University and Research Fellow with the Centre for Community Initiatives in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania (summer and autumn, 2007).
Rodrigo Pizarro's (1st) former organization, Fundacion Terram, located in Santiago, Chile, was nominated for a Tech Museum of Innovation's 2007 Intel Environment Award for a project on integrated salmon-farming.
Student Publications and Presentations
Adam Millard-Ball (2nd) published two articles on climate policy in Planning, the magazine of the American Planning Association: the first on California's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation; the second on the climate planning efforts of local governments in the US.
Caroline Scruggs (2nd) published the "Technical Practice Update on Effects of Wastewater Treatment on Microconstituents and Endocrine Disrupting Compounds" for the Water Environment Federation.
Kaitlin Shilling (2nd) contributed to a report for International Alert (based in London) on the impact that security and conflict will have on certain countries' ability to adapt to climate change.
Kim Nicholas Cahill (5th) gave an invited talk on "Climate and Winegrowing in Napa" at the inaugural Napa Wine Educators Academy and will be speaking on climate change and the future of the wine industry to an international group of wine business executives, part of the "Great Wine Capitals" network, in Porto, Portugal this November.
Kate Brauman (4th) and Josh Goldstein (grad) presented their work to the Speaker of the House of Hawai'i's State Legislature and other key decision-makers at a symposium of The Natural Capital Project in July.
Rebeca Hwang (5th) presented a poster at Sunbelt XXVII International Sunbelt Social Network Conference, 8th European Social Network Conference on Corfu, Greece in May. Rebeca was also profiled in the September issue of Information Technology, under the "Avant Garde" research section.
