Application Process
MS Application Procedure
Only students enrolled in a Stanford professional degree program in the Business, Law, or Medical Schools are eligible to apply for the MS in Environment and Resources degree.
Application deadline for Fall 2008: 5:00 p.m., Friday April 4, 2008*
Beginning Academic Year 2007-08, Graduate School of Business students and Stanford Law School students will have the option to pursue a joint MBA-MS Environment and Resources degree or joint JD-MS Environment and Resources degree, respectively. The joint MBA-MS degree requires a total of 129 units (84 for the MBA; 45 for the MS) to be completed over approximately eight academic quarters. The joint JD-MS degree allows up to 30 semester or 45 quarter units to count towards both degrees, potentially allowing the joint degree to be completed in three academic years (depending on when student enter joint degree program and courses selected). At this time, students in the School of Medicine may apply to pursue a dual degree, which requires that they meet all requirements for their MD and complete an additional 45 units for the MS Environment and Resources degree; no course units may be counted towards both degrees. Completion of the dual MS degree is anticipated to require three quarters in addition to the quarters required for the MD degree.

HOW TO APPLY
After consulting with IPER staff and faculty, should you decide to apply for the joint/dual degree program, please submit the following application materials:
| • |
IPER Masters Degree Program Application |
| • |
A statement of purpose that describes your career plans and how you intend to integrate your professional degree with your MS in Environment and Resources degree at Stanford and in your professional pursuits. (2 single-spaced pages maximum) |
| • |
A draft of the Program Proposal for a Master's Degree, a form required by the Registrar, listing the courses you plan to take to fulfill your MS in Environment and Resources degree. Note that this is a draft for application purposes only; it does not need to be signed and will be submitted to the Office of the Registrar only upon admission to the program in its final form, as revised by the student and his/her advisors. |
| • |
One letter of recommendation from a Stanford faculty member. You may also submit supplementary letters from recommenders who can specifically attest to your commitment to sustainability and environmental problem-solving. Letters can be sent by your recommenders directly to IPER at the address below or can be included in your application packet, provided they are in a sealed envelope with the unbroken signature of the author over the seal. |
| • |
One unofficial transcript (from AXESS) of the coursework in your Stanford professional degree program. |
| • |
A copy of your professional school application, including: LSAT, MCAT, or GMAT scores; transcripts from all previously attended institutions; and three letters of recommendations (if permitted). Submit GREs scores if you have taken the exam within the past five years. (The student services office in your professional school may be willing to submit your prior application directly to IPER for you.) |
While a strong background in science or mathematics is not required for acceptance, basic quantitative skills are necessary for many courses. If your quantitative skills cannot be assessed from your scores or prior coursework, you may be required to take the GRE prior to applying to IPER for diagnostic purposes and/or be required to take additional coursework in quantitative methods.
Application packets may be mailed or delivered to IPER, (see Contact Us for IPER's mailing address and physical location) or e-mailed to nelsondn@stanford.edu.
DEADLINES, REVIEW, AND NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE
Students are strongly encouraged to apply to IPER during the Spring quarter of their first year in their professional school. In exceptional circumstances, students will be allowed to apply to IPER in their second year in their professional degree program. Students for whom acceptance into IPER may influence their decision to attend the Stanford Schools of Business, Law or Medicine should contact IPER as soon as they have been accepted into their professional school program.
Application deadline for Fall 2008: 5:00 p.m., Friday April 4, 2008*
Applications will be reviewed by the IPER staff and by faculty representing the professional schools (currently, Erica Plambeck in the GSB and Meg Caldwell in the Law School). Reviewers will take into account the applicant’s academic and professional preparation for the program, his/her justification for pursuing both degrees, his/her understanding of the time and commitment required to complete both degrees, and the program’s overall capacity. Recommendations for admissions will be made to the IPER Executive Committee for final approval. Applicants should expect to hear a decision before the end of the quarter in which they submit their application.
All admitted MS students will be assessed a $50 processing fee by the Stanford Registrar's Office to activate simultaneous degree programs using the Graduate Program Authorization Petition.
Please contact the IPER Assistant Director, Danielle Nelson, at nelsondn@stanford.edu if you have additional questions about the application process.
* Note: the application deadline has been changed from the previously posted deadline of May 16, 2008 to accommodate the exam schedule of the Law students and registration deadlines of GSB students. Please contact IPER if you have a question about the deadline.
